About Tiny Matters

What lies behind us, and what lies before us, are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.

Ralph Waldo Emerson

In the Spring of 2019, we took a newly sober couple—she from heroin and he from alcohol—and their very new baby into our home. They were not people we knew well by any means; in fact, we were barely acquainted. And then, for a handful of months, they were family.

I share a true story. The names are fictitious. The events, places and characters are not. These posts have been rebuilt from my memories, my notes and from personal conversations. Events in which I was not personally involved have been created from research of public records, personal interviews and my own interpretation of what the characters (some of whom I did not know) might have experienced, thought, felt or said.

Tiny Matters, at least for now, is a compilation of events from an eye-opening, life-changing decision that resulted in a new awareness of self. I hope to convey a realistic view of addiction, the struggle of recovery and the joy and heartache that often come with choosing to go where Someone Greater is leading you.
